Hair Play - oil pastels

I bet you've all seen this little gem floating around the internet.

Before reading the caption I thought 'oh, colored extensions... that's fun - done that before!'
(Circa 2006)

Then I actually realized what it was - temporary streaks compliments of oil pastels! For all you non-art school kiddos, oil pastels are like a little oily crayon, a popular medium for drawings and paintings.

So I pulled out my set of oil pastels, settled on a blue color and set to coloring my hair one evening.

It was messy. Soft, oily crayon + hair = colored hands. And with my hair straight it looked those silly feathers that I despise!

So I played a bit more and ended up with this...

Is it fun? Sure. Is it worth it - in my opinion, no. Due to the nature of oil pastels, the color never really 'seals' even after multiple coats of hairspray it'll still come right off on your hands. Would it be fun for a quick pop on a night out, definitely. I personally would rather just throw a few colored extensions in though.

Hey, yah never know until you try though!

(And it surprisingly washes right out very easily, which I was sorta concerned about)

That is so fun! I love that it comes out right away! What a neat way to experiment with color

i saw this on your tweet page this weekend.

glad you tried it out and i didn't have to. because that would involve me going to the craft store to buy pastels. and that is just too much work.

yeah, I'd go the easy route and just do the color extensions. But that's awesome that you tried and actually "colored" your hair! I loved that look with your curled hair! And would you hate me if I said I have feathers in my hair? Yep, three of them. They've been in for months...Can we still be friends?

I agree about just doing color extensions. I am also happy to see that I'm not the only one who despises the feathers!!!

Oh it's cute...so creative. I used to have colored extensions and I've got to say I never thought that would come back in style. AND, I agree...stick with the extensions, though this is fun for a quick and easy fix.

Hey, at least you tried it, right? I love the way it looks, but don't think I would have the patience to do it. I'll stick to using my art utensils for drawing and painting :) hope you're having a good week. I promise we'll catch up once I'm back from the madness of my travels!!

I kind of just want to do my tips. I'm not sure if I could get away with it at work

Kevin Murphy has a line of hair shadows that do the same thing but are less messy. You can also try using a strong pigmented eye shadow. Messy hands but won't transfer off your hair all that easily, and washes right out.
